History
Padma Division was under the ancient kingdom of Gangariddhi. During the Mughal period this area was known as Fatehabad Sarkar. On 22 October 2019, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting of the National Implementation Committee (NICAR) on Administrative Restructuring, which decided to form new divisions named Padma and Meghna. There will be two divisions named after two big rivers. He discussed the formation of Meghna Division with greater Comilla-Noakhali region separated from Chittagong Division and Padma Division with greater Faridpur region separated from Dhaka Division and ordered to take necessary measures in this regard. The five districts of Padma Division include Faridpur, Shariatpur, Rajbari, Gopalganj and Madaripur. On the other hand Comilla, Brahmanbaria and Chandpur and Noakhali, Feni and Lakshmipur are in the Meghna division. All the previous divisions were named after local cities, but this time, for the first time, two divisions are going to be named after two rivers.
However, due to the global economic crisis and the government's cost-cutting policy, the decision to form the Padma Division and the Meghna Division was temporarily postponed at the NICAR meeting on November 27, 2022.
At present there are eight administrative divisions in the country. These are - Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal, Sylhet, Rangpur and Mymensingh. Beyond this are the Padma and Meghna divisions. With two new divisions, the number of divisions in the country will stand at 10.
